‘Eddie the Eagle’ scored the highest opening for a British film since ‘Spectre.’
Mirroring its fall in the U.S., Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was able to stay on top of the box office despite a steep drop of 69 percent from its record-breaking British bow.
Warner Bros.’ DC Entertainment universe launcher fell from $20.7 million opening to $6.4 million, and may now need some superhuman efforts if it’s to match current year-topper Deadpool‘s $53.7 million. BvS has grossed $39.7 million to date.
Eddie the Eagle, Lionsgate’s feel-good biopic of ski jumper Eddie Edwards starring Taron Egerton, scored a higher place than its subject matter ever managed, landing in second with a $4 million debut thanks to four days of previews. Despite failing to take the crown, it was the biggest opening for a British film since Spectre last year.
Zootropolis (released in the U.S. as Zootopia) added $3.8 million to bring its two-week total to $18 million, edging out Kung Fu Panda 3 — which reached $15.8 million thanks to fourth weekend earnings of $1.1 million — as this year’s biggest animation so far.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 rounded out the top five, Universal’s comedy sequel grabbing just shy of $900,000 in its second week to bring its total to $3.5 million. It’s now unlikely to even approach its predecessors’ $19.3 million from a decade earlier.
