The Weinstein Co. has pulled About Ray from the release calendar just days before it was set to open in select theaters.

Director Gaby Dellal‘s transgender drama, starring Elle FanningNaomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, was scheduled to begin rolling out on Friday, but Harvey Weinstein‘s company has decided to shift course. Insiders say About Ray will get an Oscar-qualifying run later this year, but no release date was given.

The 11th-hour move comes after About Ray premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to lukewarm reviews. Insiders say the company had been contemplating a move for weeks, but were waiting to see how it fared in Toronto.

About Ray tells the story of a teenager (Fanning) who decides to transition from female to male, and how she copes with the reaction of her mother (Watts) and gay grandmother (Sarandon).

TWC, which has been grappling with plenty of executive drama — including the resignation and subsequent return of president and COO David Glasser — has several high-profile fall and winter titles, including Carol (Nov. 20) and Quentin Tarantino‘s The Hateful Eight (Dec. 25).
