The Canadian event, which has been rebranded to introduce iHeartRadio to Canada, also added Alessia Cara and hip hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to its performance lineup.
Nick Jonas, having just nabbed his highest Hot 100 debut as a soloist with “Close,” will perform at the 2016 Much Music Video Awards.
The Canadian TV street party has also been rebranded as the iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards to introduce the iHeartRadio brand to Canada this summer. As one-third of The Jonas Brothers, Nick Jonas performed with brothers Joe and Kevin at the 2009 MMVAs, and appeared at last year’s MMVAs on his own.
Jonas will perform again in Toronto on June 19, just before he and Demi Lovato kick off their Future Now Tour with 44 North American dates. The iHeartRadio-branded MMVAs on Friday also added Canadian breakout star Alessia Cara and hip hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to the Canadian awards show to air on the Much, CTV and VRAK channels.
The iHeartRadio MMVAs will be a Canadian coming-out party for the U.S. digital radio giant. iHeartRadio, formerly known as Clear Channel, recently signed an exclusive pact with Canadian broadcaster Bell Media to launch its brand in Canada by the summer.
Bell Media, which also operates Canada’s top-rated CTV network and a stable of cable and pay TV channels, aims to eventually get its own content into the U.S. market via iHeartMedia. “We are excited to join with the iHeartRadio brand to further elevate the MMVAs internationally,” said Randy Lennox, president of entertainment production and broadcasting at Bell Media, said in a statement.
“We’re taking the biggest street party in the world, and making it our most exciting show yet,” he added. More talent lineup announcements will be made in the coming weeks.
Last year’s MMVAs included performances and red carpet appearances by Ed Sheeran, Gigi Hadid, Cody Simpson, Hailee Steinfeld, Jason Derulo and Carly Rae Jepsen.
