Common will star opposite Reeves in the action pic.
The follow-up to John Wick has been given an official title — John Wick, Chapter 2 — and a release date from Lionsgate: Feb. 10, 2017.
Keanu Reeves returns in the lead role, while Common joins the budding action franchise as the movie’s chief villain, a head of security for a female crime lord. The sequel is set at least partially in Rome.
Chad Stahelski is directing the pic, which is due to begin shooting this week. (The original was co-directed by Stahelski and David Leitch.) Basil Iwanyk is producing.
The first John Wick — a surprise hit at the global box office — saw Reeves as an ex-hitman who is forced to dole out some retribution when gangsters break into his home, beat him up and kill his dog. He re-enters the tangled underworld of assassins he left behind and shows everyone that’s he’s still not to be trifled with.
The pre-Valentine’s Day Feb. 10-12 weekend is already jam-packed with other choices for moviegoers, including Fifty Shades Darker, The LEGO Batman Movie and The Mountain Between Us.
