Hey Katy-cats, did you expect Katy Perry to rock some major bling or at the very least debut a new hair color at her first-ever Golden Globes? Not this awards show. That’s because Perry tapped superhero stylist Leslie Fremar (who works with Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon and Charlize Theron, among others), to create a pitch-perfect ensemble for the red carpet.

“It was very exciting when I got the call,” Fremar tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I’d only met her one other time. It’s pretty major. She’s so inspiring, she has so many ideas. She’s so used to making costumes, and she really knows her body. It was a really fun collaboration.” But Fremar had to work on a deadline of less than a week to put the look together: She’d heard about the opportunity with Perry “I think 5 days ago,” she says. “It was very hectic. But we did it!”

The final look was a plunging rose quartz Prada creation that combined Perry’s pop star vibe with Fremar’s classic style.

“Anyone who knows my work knows that what I do is simple and pared-down. It’s thoughtful but it’s not eccentric,” Fremar says. “I think she was just looking to do something different. And when I thought about what would be different for her it was about making it simple.”

According to Fremar, this look was all about balance. “She wanted to stay true to being a musician but be appropriate for the event,” says Fremar. “It’s a very fine line because you don’t want to be somebody that you’re not. But then you also want to be respectful, because you’re there honoring people’s work.”

One thing Perry didn’t change? Her idea for her ‘do. “She wanted her hair to be a little rock ‘n roll,” Fremar says of the voluminous style that Perry joked came from an old-school “Bumpit.” The inspiration photos she brought in actually were her own red carpet looks! (And perhaps Perry described the look best in one simple sentence: “I got my wig on and my globes [out].”)

So is it possible that Perry’s going through a major style evolution? It’s hard to say (after all, this is a gal who once classified her personal style as “Meow”). But according to Fremar, Perry may pull out some super-interesting looks for the rest of awards season. “She’s very aware of her brand and she’s wicked smart. She comes off as being light and fun, but she’s also very impressive,” Fremar says. “Everything is really thought-through.”
