Eddie Redmayne Says He Helps Pay Drama Students' London Rent

With one Oscar already under his belt, another potentially on the way for The Danish Girl and a lead role in the first Harry Potter spin-off, Eddie Redmayne probably doesn’t have to worry about paying the rent for a few years.

But the actor says he appreciates what a struggle it can be for those without his credentials, especially in London, where the price of a one-bedroom flat can reach in excess of $4,200 per month.

In an interview with GQ, Redmayne said having parents who lived in the British capital was “the greatest privilege,” meaning he didn’t have to pay rent when he left university. It was during this period, while working as a pub waiter, that Redmayne won a career-breaking role in Twelfth Night at Shakespeare’s Globe Theater in 2002.

Now, as a successful film actor, he said he receives requests from those without such a fortunate background.

“I get letters from people trying to go to drama school and needing to pay their rent,” he said. “And so that’s something I occasionally do. It’s impossibly expensive to live in London.”
